Popham Beach

Spencer and I had some errands to run yesterday about an hour south of where we live, in Bath, but I was over it almost as soon as we got there. After we took a coffee break we headed 20 minutes south to Phippsburg, where Popham Beach State Park is. Why not visit the beach during the middle of winter?

Unlike our recent trip to Owl's Head State Park, Popham Beach wasn't completely deserted. There were quite a few people surfing while we were there. The entrance to the beach was covered in thick snow and there was no escaping it. We trudged through the snow, some of it went up to our knees. Spencer fell forward and faceplanted in the snow a couple times, but he'll deny that.

Before we left the area I really wanted to visit Fort St. George, part of the Popham Colony that was founded in 1607, but I think it's safe to assume that no one has shoveled the a path through the snow there. We hung around the beach for a while but big surprise, we were pretty cold, especially since we had walked through a ton of snow. We made our way back to the car, thawed out a bit (thank you, heated seats), and headed home, thus concluding yet another mini-winter adventure.

The beach was more beautiful than I could capture, and certainly more beautiful than I was expecting.  We'll definitely be heading back there when the snow melts!

  1. I love visiting beaches in the winter time! It's one of my favorite things to do. My friend has mentioned going to Popham Beach every summer, but I have never been. Maybe this year...!
