My first Birchbox

This post contains affiliate links meaning if you click and/or make a purchase with one of those links, I make a few cents at no additional cost to you. Thanks for supporting Poppyseeder!

My 24th birthday was at the end of July and my fiancĂ©'s family was so kind to gift me a year subscription to Birchbox. I've been wanting to sign up for a couple years but...you know how it is. I just didn't. Ha. Anyway, I'm super stoked because I've never gotten any sort of subscription box before and it just makes checking my PO box a little more fun.

Since all but one product were sample sizes, I'm not sure I can categorize this under "review." Maybe "review/first impressions"?

  1. Acure Organics Lip Lush in color "Daaang!", $5.99- I haven't been a fan of lip gloss in years. The last time I put some on before receiving this in my box was probably 10 years ago. I wasn't expecting to like this product, but unlike most lip glosses it isn't gooey and sticky at all. It's smooth, more like a lip balm. I also wasn't expecting to like this color, I was afraid it would be too dark, but it goes on very sheen. I probably wouldn't purchase this, but if you like lip glosses, go for it.
  2. Vasanti BrightenUp! Enzymatic Face Rejuvenator, $34- I've heard great things about this product, but it just didn't impress me. When it comes to exfoliation, apricot scrub will always be the winner in my eyes. Maybe if I had a full size bottle and was able to continuously use this product I would have seen more impressive results. But I just can't say.
  3. Beauty Protector Protect & Detangle, $23.50- I was thrilled to receive this product in my box. My mom introduced me to this product a couple years ago and I fell in love. With just a couple spritzes my hair is instantly detangled. This product goes far, smells great and is 100% vegan. If you haven't tried this yet, remedy that immediately.
  4. (MALIN+GOETZ) Grapefruit Face Cleanser, $32- Unfortunately this was kinda the same situation as #2, I got maybe 6 uses out of the sample and didn't see any major differences in my skin. The smell wasn't as grapefruit-y as I hoped it would be, it's very light, and when I get a citrus face wash I like it to be super-citrusy.
  5. Number 4 Lumiere d'hiver Reconstructing Masque, $58- I was expecting to love this hair masque but unfortunately there wasn't enough in the packet to coat my hair and to make a fair judgement. The packaging did say it was a "highly concentrated formula" but I still didn't notice any difference in my hair besides that it smelled good. A bit of a disappointment.
  6. Number 4 Clarifying Shampoo, $32- My hair is never really oily, so I don't have much use for clarifying shampoos except for after I do a coconut oil treatment. This stuff got the job done easily, lathered very well, and smells great.
  7. (MALIN+GOETZ) Vitamin E Face Moisturizer, $46- This product has a very light, pleasant scent and it goes very far, I got about 5 uses out of that little packet. It gets the job done, but I didn't notice anything special about it.

Have you tried any of these products? Do you get any subscription boxes?

Music Monday #24

It's been a while since I last posted a Music Monday! While I'm not planning on resuming making weekly playlists anytime soon, I wanted to share what I've been listening to for the past few weeks. I also recently got Spotify premium and oh man. Not having to deal with those ads is the best. Why do they always play ads for horror movies at night? No thank you.

Bonus! The music video for Good Summer because I forever have mad love for Kate Nash.

Don't forget to check out my past Music Monday playlists!

#BetterSkinPowder Voxbox Review

Alright, y'all! I've received yet another 100% free product for testing purposes courtesy of Influenster! This box contained Maybelline's Better Skin Powder foundation in the lightest of the 8 shades, porcelain. While the porcelain shade worked perfectly for me, after looking through their 8 shades I think they need to expand their shades a bit as there isn't much variation. Hopefully they will do that soon.

I usually wear a liquid concealer that I set with loose powder and a matte finishing spray, but to really test this product's limits I've been foregoing that step.

What I liked:

  • The packaging. It's slim and comes with a mirror an an applicator. Perfect for slipping into my tiny purse in case I needed a touch up throughout the day.
  • The coverage. It was light but covered my (lighter) acne scars well and my skin never looked oily.
  • Even without my finishing spray, it stayed on well and I never needed a touch up.
  • While I don't know if the salicylic acid in the product actually helped my skin, I like that it's there.

What I didn't like:

  • This product seems a little dry to me. I think the main focus of it is to combat oily skin, which I don't have.

Even though it seems a little dry to me, I'm going to continue using it till I run out. I'm unsure of if I would purchase it, just because I'm content with my liquid foundation-loose powder-finishing spray routine. But! I would recommend this product, especially if you have oily skin. You can buy this foundation for $10.99 from Maybelline or Ulta.
