I've been preoccupied

As I mentioned earlier this this month, we are moving out of our current home nestled in the mountains of Western Maine. Not only did this move come about rather suddenly, but we are so eager to just get it all done and over with. Spencer and I are very excited because our new town is just outside Spencer's hometown and it's right on the ocean-- something we've been missing. Not only do we have to pack up our current house and all of our belongings, we have to pack up our new house because there's tons of stuff it in. That sounds a little sketchy, but it's not. The place belongs to some family friends and we struck that deal with them for cheaper rent. It's more work, but it will be worth it.

We've been making trips to our new house a few times a week to pack and clean, which is why I've been a little absent lately. Since I doubt you'd want to read about driving back and forth and packing, here's some little glimpses from our new home.
View of the ocean from our new house...not the best view, but it beats no view at all!

Pro tip: don't wear flats on a rocky beach. Ouch.

Theo made himself at home very quickly.

We never took Theo to the beach when we lived in Florida, so this was Theo's first ocean experience. Watching him try to walk on the rocky beach was quite entertaining but once he got the hang of it, he started running in circles and splashing around in the shallows. He was more excited than we expected him to be. He continued to run around and all of a sudden...he pooped right there on the beach.

Of course.

What I learned from wearing a Fitbit for a month

Spencer, my fiancĂ©, had been talking about how great his Fitbit was for months before I finally gave in and got one. I got the Charge HR in black (but it's also available in teal and pink and oh my goodness, they're cute). I was hesitant because I hate wearing things on my wrist and I can barely remember to put my engagement ring on, how was I supposed to remember to put a Fitbit on?

The first time I opened the app I saw that Fitbit had set daily goals. The ones I paid the most attention to were:
  • 10,000 steps per day
  • 250 steps per hour (from 9am to 5pm)
  • 5 miles a day
  • climb 10 flights of stairs a day

I scoffed. That all seemed so easy.

Nope.

WEEK ONE:
Within the first 4 days I realized how few steps I regularly took each day. I wasn't even getting close to 10,000 steps. So I challenged Spencer to Fitbit's Weekend Warrior challenge and won with 26,468 steps. I really had to work to beat Spencer. I was running in place, dancing around the room while carrying on a conversation, and running up and down the stairs as much as I could. And it hurt. Muscles in my feet and legs that had never been sore before were suddenly so sore that it hurt to stand. I was sore for days.
Not only was I sore, this thing had sucked me in. I was checking my stats every 20 minutes.

WEEK TWO:
Meeting Fitbit's daily goals was getting easier at this point, but if I surpassed them it wasn't by much. My legs were still a tiny bit sore pretty much all the time. I was still jogging in place any chance I got, like when I was outside with Theo waiting for him to do his business.
I also started searching for more sports bras that I could wear under my everyday clothes because man, I must have looked really weird while I was walking my dog, jogging in place, and holding my boobs.

WEEK THREE:
I was getting determined to surpass all of Fitbit's daily goals and to beat Spencer at the Weekend Warrior and Workweek Hustle challenges. I was surpassing Fitbit's daily step goals by about 3,000 steps and averaging 18 flights of stairs a day.
I was starting to notice that my legs and glutes looked more toned. I was likin' the results from 13,000 steps a day.

WEEK FOUR:
Before I started using my Fitbit I could sit at my computer for a couple hours without getting up but by this point, I was getting up every 20 minutes or so. If I was in the basement and I needed something from my room two flights up, I didn't think "eh, I'll get it later," I got my butt up to go get it. I just couldn't stay sitting for too long.

So, my takeaway...

  • Man, I was out of shape.
    • I'm not saying I'm necessarily in shape now, but I'm certainly working on it.
  • I feel so much better now than I did a few weeks ago, not as sluggish.
  • I feel more productive. Even though usually when I'm sitting at my computer for hours on end, I'm working and being productive in that aspect, but reaching and surpassing my step goals makes me feel productive regarding my health (and again, I feel less sluggish, making me feel more energized and productive for other tasks!)

Sprout VoxBox reviews

I received my Sprout VoxBox from Influenster, so it's time to review some stuff! If you're not familiar with Influenster, let me tell you...it's awesome. Short version: you write reviews of products and they send you 100% free products to try and review. You can receive things from beauty products to dog food(Psst...sign up here).

The first product I tried was Curate's Dark & Tempting snack bar. Since I got my VoxBox in the mail a couple days after many other people, I lurked the #sproutvoxbox hashtag and read that many people didn't like this bar. I think the general consensus was that it is "too healthy tasting." I also don't really like figs, so I wasn't looking forward to trying this bar, but I actually loved it! The balsamic vinegar taste is very subtle and the hazelnuts add a great taste and texture to it. It's not like one of those fake-healthy granola bars that is loaded with sugar. It does taste healthy, but I don't think that's a bad thing at all. I would definitely take these along for hiking/camping. I've never seen these in any stores before, but if I find them I'm going to stock up.

I tried Hair Food's moisture honey-apricot shampoo and conditioner and well....nothing about it stood out to me. The shampoo lathered very well and I think it smelled better than the conditioner did. I do like that they're both paraben-free and the shampoo is silicone-free. I just thought these were like hair products you find in a hotel-- they get the job done fine, but I wouldn't ever buy a full size bottle of it.

I had to stop myself from eating these chips in one sitting. They're light, crunchy, and delicious. The flavor is subtle so they are good on their own or with a salsa or dip. I'm not sure what else I can say about chips besides that I would buy these.

I was happy to receive a sample of ECOS' laundry detergent because this is a brand that I use regularly on my clothes, though I had never used this scent before. It's hypoallergenic, good for people with sensitive skin, and smells great. However, it doesn't leave a strong scent on clothes, which many people equate with the clothes not being clean, but of course they are. I personally like that it doesn't leave a strong scent on clothes. Plus there are no dyes or formaldehydes, it's biodegradable, and is not tested on animals and has no animal ingredients.

I've never been a fan of protein drinks, but I gave this one a shot. It's vegan, soy-free, and gluten-free. The directions said to mix the contents of the packet with only 4 ounces of dairy-free milk, but that kept the drink very concentrated which I didn't like. I added 4 more ounces of cashew milk and it was much better. It's not super-gritty in texture like many other protein drinks. However, I personally wouldn't buy this product. The reasons being: I don't ever buy protein drinks and this has stevia in it, and as I mentioned before, I don't like stevia. This product leaves a strong aftertaste of stevia in my mouth and I just can't stand it. But! If you like protein drinks and stevia doesn't bother you like it does me, I would totally recommend this product.

Don't forget to sign up for Influenster so that you can start receiving 100% free VoxBoxes!

Which of these products are you most interested in? Have you tried any of them?

*I received these products complimentary from Influenster for testing purposes and all opinions stated here are mine!*

Moving On

via my other blog, Ran Away to Maine

Spencer and I moved into this house in September and after having a conversation with our landlords a few months ago, we were under the impression that we would be renewing our lease this summer for another year. We felt so relieved and secure knowing that we wouldn't have to move once again, especially so close to our upcoming wedding. We aren't in love with this house, but it works for us. We aren't in love with this area, it doesn't have everything we want, but we like it quite a bit and we love exploring the surrounding mountains. Recently I've been nesting a bit more since I was preparing to stay here longer and we've been working in the garden quite a bit, tilling the soil in the garden plot, preparing to plant pumpkins, and trying to get a little color into the dried up flowerbeds. We also fenced in a portion of the backyard so that Theo can run around freely. I was okay with the idea of staying here till the summer of 2017.

Last week our landlords informed us that they're putting this house on the market in the next few weeks, giving us the option to buy it from them or move out when our lease is up. This house isn't one we would buy, so we've decided to move. It is incredibly hard to find a place to rent in Maine that suits our needs and budget, but thankfully we quickly found a place. I'm honestly shocked how quickly and easily we found a new place to live. The 24 hours before we found our new place were agonizing. I couldn't sleep, I was making a million mental lists of things we needed to do and by when, my heart felt like it was about to beat out of my chest...I just didn't know what to do. But oh, how quickly things turned around!

Although I hate moving, I am very excited about moving to our new house. I think it's going to suit our needs much better and it is only a 60 second walk to a little beach overlooking the Penobscot Bay. After spending the past 8 years in a little beach town in Florida, I have really been missing the ocean. Plus, our new house is only 60 miles away from Acadia National Park versus our current house which is 190 miles away. I truly can't wait to move in to our new place and start exploring that area more.

Moral of the story: get everything in writing before you start making plans and don't bother beautifying a lawn that you don't own. But most importantly, don't freak out too much. You'll be okay!
