Road trip regrets

Almost two years ago my fiancĂ©, Spencer, and I took our first road trip together. We drove from Florida to Maine and back. This trip was also my first time going to Maine, and New England for that matter. I had no idea that less than a year later I'd be moving to Maine!

Timeline for our first trip to Maine:
  • Woke up at 6am for work
  • After work, packed up car and headed to Orlando for a Say Anything concert
  • Concert ended at 11pm, and we hit the road again right after
  • By 10am the next morning, we were both crashing so we stopped in North Carolina to sleep and shower
  • 6 hours later, we were back on the road
  • By 4am, we were taking a nap in the car in the parking lot of a rest stop in Delaware
  • By 11am, we were in Massachusetts and both feeling bad
  • By 4:30pm, we finally made it to our Bed & Breakfast in Castine, Maine

Okay, so obviously the plan of leaving for a 1,648-mile/2,651-kilometer road trip after we had already been up all day and after we had gone to a concert was not the smartest. This trip truly was poorly planned. We were exhausted most of the time and ate nothing but Taco Bell on the drive up. But! It was so much fun!

Here's what I would do differently for next time:
  • Get a good night's sleep before...obviously
  • Keep a bag of essentials within reach, not in the trunk
  • Keep the car clean and organized. I repeat, keep the car clean and organized!
  • Make a long playlist (I always use Spotify) for the trip up and bring an auxiliary cord and charger
  • Bring CDs for when you're in a no-service zone and the radio stations aren't that great
  • Bring toll money even if you select the no-toll route on your GPS
  • Better yet, don't go the no-toll route because it takes a few hours longer
  • Get a Nalgene bottle or something similar and fill it with water because bottled water is lame
  • Bring healthy snacks and avoid fast food. I love bringing GoGo Squeez applesauce with me-- no-mess delicious, and refreshing!
  • Keep gas station, drugstore, and coffee shop loyalty/rewards cards in wallet
  • Set a certain place to stop and sleep for the night and stick with it. 45 minutes after you say "I feel fine, let's keep going," you'll wish you were freshly showered and in your pajamas
  • Pee when you have the chance! I have a thing about public restrooms...I only use them if they're impeccably clean or if I really have to go. For your bladder's sake, get it together and pee when you need to
  • Don't bother with makeup, you'll just end up rubbing it off
  • If you're still on your way home at 3am and you have to work at 9am, just call out for the day
